Divinity school to present award to minister despite controversial remarks

Abstract:
Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor will be honored at a Brite Divinity School banquet March 29, despite recent concerns from the public in response to media reports of the pastor's harsh past sermons.

A statement released Monday from Brite stated that the school would continue to honor and recognize the Rev....

A school that calls itself Christian and accepts millions from the United States government should not give this man any honor but should denounce his type of non-Christ-like hate speech. When can we move away from racist speech on both sides?

Don, Wright is a Christian minister. Are you?

I was so glad to hear that the Brite Divinity School is honoring Rev Wright for his forty years of wonderful service.

Your right, Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing. But there are consequences that comes with freedom of speech. Remember that.

I am not sure if TCU understands patriotism or self protection. It's for sure Obama and his preacher does not. If TCU is going to side with the liberial give away this country faction then it's time for me to abandon TCU. When I attended TCU evidently the liberial, socialist faction had not taken over the church and/or University. I will not identify myself with TCU from this day forward.

His words are not free speech. They are hate-filled and exactly what they have accused whites of spouting for the last 40 years. I am disappointed that TCU has chosen to honor this man. He spouts poison and hate and further divides a country that needs no help in dividing itself. There are plenty of other African American preachers preaching the BIBLE from the pulpit instead of their political views. I love his statement that Jesus knew what it was like to be a black man in a rich white man's world. Maybe it's my eyes, but Israeli people don't look very black to me and Italians generally aren't very white. And in my Bible, Jesus tells the Jews to give Caesar what is Caesar's and not the other way around (government handouts). It also says to uphold your government and pray for its leaders. Not damn them.

Brite doesn't accept government money. We're a private institution. Get your facts straight.

And yes, his words are free speech, and such is the beauty of this nation. What he said was hate-filled and wrong, but it was his right to say them. It's also my right to say that Brite shouldn't give this man the time of day. Shame on my own institution for rewarding this man's hate.

[I sent this email to Dr. Williams this morning and copied Chancellor Boschini. I'm proud to be a horned frog alum, and after these developments, I lament the close association TCU has with Brite.]

Dr. Williams -

I was extremely disappointed to read [about your decision to present an award to Rev. Wright] in the morning news today. Wright's racist and irrational views are appalling, and the fact that he has been so well-received in the black community is even more terrifying than the vitriol he has spewed from the pulpit. His core beliefs may on the surface unite black church-goers, but its end result is hatred, bitterness, and a twisted world view that only seeks to divide this country based on events that occurred generations ago.

Your choice to honor this coward - whose popularity stems from fear and ill-placed grudges - is shameful. He has a right to free speech, but rewarding him for foolish fear-mongering is the wrong thing to do.

Thank you, Chancellor Boschini, for disagreeing with Dr. Williams' and Brite's decision.

Articles in other publications (eg. The Dallas Morning News) published the following:

"TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr. said Monday that 'TCU supports the right of free speech even when the opinions expressed are controversial. That is what a university is about. But giving an award is another matter, and in this specific case in light of Reverend Wright's recently discovered remarks, TCU would not give such an award.'"

Why is every body making such a big deal about the way African American talks. It's called Ebonics, you idiot. They just think differently, talk differently. For example, the Jews may say things like

"God Bless America. The land that I love, etc..."

In Ebonics, the type that Obama speaks, it's just sound differently. Something along the line of

"God Damn America. The land Obama loathe, etc..." that is all.

behaviors from years ago are now dredged up with the intent to influence current behaviors.

i would hope wright's behavior would stimulate discussion rather than tilt the political process.

a wise man/woman will consider the totality of the circumstance before making final decisions.

i hope brite did too?

As a graduate of TCU, I was very shocked to hear that the Brite School would give such a presigious award to the Rev. Wright. While I certainly support free speach, Rev. Wrights' comments represent anything but tolerance. Yes, there still needs to be progress in race relations, but the vile hate and disinformation that Wright has preached do nothing but further divide people and perpetrates ludicrious theories about the American government. I would encourage all alums to not support the Brite School and to ask questions how their future donations will be allocated.

I applaud the decision of the Brite Divinity School to bestow this award upon Rev. Wright. Hopefully, the administration does not fold under the pressure.

Has anyone pointed out the Chancellor Victor J. Boschini is a trustee at Brite? Funny how his statement doesn't mention it (he must have just forgot). I guess it would be too funny if he said, "I don't agree with this, but boy I sure love being a trustee at Brite."

The following is the text of the emails I sent to Dr. Williams and to Chancellor Boschini

Dear Chancellor Boschini:
I want to thank you, Chancellor Boschini, for disagreeing with Brite's decision to go ahead with the honor banquet for pastor Jeremiah Wright. I am pleased to learn that the event honoring Pastor Jeremiah Wright at Texas Christian University has been moved off campus, but this doesn't go far enough. Here is the text of the e-mail I sent to Dr. Williams:

As a graduate of Brite Divinity School, MTS,1999, I am writing you to say that I am sickened by your failure to rescind the invitation to pastor Jeremiah Wright.

America can no longer afford a double standard of multiple contexts when it comes to racially charged inflammatory speech. As Obama said we are now living in "a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems," and according to Obama that demands a context of unity! Ministers, no matter how much good they might have done, and no matter what the racial context, can no longer get a free pass for Anti-American, anti-Jewish or anti-White racist speech!!! Universities can no longer hide behind "the right of free speech" lie that rewards leftist anarchists and Anti-American traitors while silencing the voices and limiting the access of traditional Americans!

If Brite does not immediately rescind this invitation to Wright, I will be compelled by my conscience to repudiate my Theology degree from Brite Divinity School. I am calling on all Brite alumni, who share my disgust with Brite for this appallingly stupid and racially divisive decision, to join with me in a public demand that Brite must IIMMEDIATELY RECIND THIS INVITATIN TO WRIGHT!

Sincerely,
Barbara W. Sowell

I am ashamed of TCU. They have no business supporting a racist. There are plenty of other great people to give the award to and they pick this guy simply because he is popular and TCU thinks they will get publicity for pulling this stunt. The truth is, none of the publicity is good, and many donors, including my family, are rethinking their decisions to donate to TCU in the future.

Wright's 9/11 sermon... "controversial"?

posted 3/20/08 @ 2:23 PM CST

This article uncritically repeats Obama's mischaracterization of Rev. Wright's statements as "controversial," which rather understates the matter. They were not "controversial." They were vicious and vile.

Madonna is "controversial," folks. Changing the opening theme to Monk was "controversial." The Patriots' SpyGate was "controversial."

This was vicious and vile anti-Americanism and racism and anti-semitism. If those things are, to you, merely "controversial," it seems you need a teachable moment or two, rather than presuming to fill us with "understanding."

But the fact is, Obama didn't even call Wright's remarks controversial. Obama is playing it even more cute than that. He said he heard things that "could be considered" controversial. He then spent the rest of his speech telling us that what we thought was controversial is explainable due to the history of racial tension in the United States.

Reposted above is the sermon delivered on Sunday, September 16, 2001. Firemen were still digging through skin-blistering ash in a futile effort to find more survivors of the 9/11 attacks. And putting their health at risk breathing heavily in air tainted with asbestos and toxins.

Now, once again: Watch Wright's relish -- his nearly orgasmic delight -- in saying "America's chickens... have come home... to roost." Watch this cocksucker dance and flutter his hands in a happy flourish as he celebrates and exults in the deaths of 3000 Americans and foreign nationals, all civilians and all innocents, as it represents a vindication of his sickening worldview and a well-deserved comeupppance for the nation he so deeply hates.

Now, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama: As your disgusting spiritual mentor and political guide is publicly celebrating the terrorism of 9/11 as blatantly as the Palestinian terrorists did that very day, and as excitedly as Al Qaeda does:

Would you say these comments are merely "controversial" or potentially "controversial"?

Would you like a second try at that?

How many prisoners did Wright "minister" to cancel out this disgusting celebration of mass murder on a mega scale?

How much "Hope" and "Change" must Brite Divinity deliver to cancel out their voluntary, bear-hug embrace of this repellent seditionist?

This should be no surprise the award ceremony is being moved off campus...look at who they are awarding!!! I am sick and tired of the double standard. If a white minister said everything that Jeremiah Wright said, then this award ceremony would have been canceled in a heartbeat, especially since TCU doesn't want any negative attention drawn to it. Even though Brite is not part of TCU, most people do not realize the two schools are separate. For this reason, TCU should be coming down hard on Brite to cancel. I don't care what accomplishments Wright has done throughout his career, because he is spreading "Black Theology." Black Theology is not based on true Christianity or spreading the word of Jesus. Black Theology is simply a group of racist African Americans who enjoy the Tax Exempt status while preaching racism, hatred, violence, conspiracy theories, anti-government, and Socialism. On another note, look at how Jeremiah Wright is spreading his wonderful message to the children in his congregation. Those children are America's next generation. When will this racial bigotry and double standards end???
