Promise ring tradition reveals insecurity; OK to just date

Abstract:
You all know the movie scene. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. An unrealistically short period of time passes and boy pops the question ...

Will you promise me?

Wait, that's not right. You must have heard wrong.

And you'd be right. You did hear wrong because I can't think of any movie that fits the "happily ever after category" and adds the step of a promise ring......

Ok Kathleen here is the thing. Lets be honest no tradition is really neccessary now is it? I mean not when you really get down to the hunter gatherer sence of the word I mean traditions are not central to survival so they are all actually frivolous so are we going to throw them all out because they are not really needed? I mean are you willing to cut out Christmas? Because lets face it first off Jesus probably wasnt even born on the 25th of Dec. and its nothing but commercialism these days. Some people consider the promise ring because at this point in life an engagement ring maybe entirely too much money. I know that is the only reason I considered it. You didnt even approach that possibility. So before you go shooting your mouth off maybe you should explore some other ideas.

Having a promise ring is to signify wanting to be engaged, but maybe not having the money to do so just yet. It's to show other people that you are in love and indeed taken. Just because it is an older tradition, doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be done away with.
Also, basing your opinion about promise rings, and their supposed failure, on your five friends who had them is completely inaccurate.
