Advertising for religious events misleading

I could not disagree with you more, I went to a church to hear a sermon one time and all I got was a rock concert.
Agreed, The advertising should state what will be in the event, However religion is not personal, to the extent of the great commission, When you have the truth you need to share it in a kind loving way, and I am sure that is what they were doing,
"By grace through Faith, have you been made acceptable to God" Or another way to say it "Repent of your sins and believe in Jesus Christ and you will be saved".
Hope this helps.

Woman made right choice in refusing deployment

Wyatt--you most likely have absolutely no experience with the military personally. This woman volunteered to serve her country, support and defend the Constitution, and so on. She went AWOL for 24 hours and missed troop movement to combat zone. Both of these are quite serious offenses. Further, it was not as if her situation just fell apart--she had an extra 30 days to get her situation in order. Instead of informing and working with her chain of command, she did not. Yes, she has priorities and so do the number of single (and married) mothers and fathers I am currently deployed with. It comes down to personal responsibility and acting like an adult.

During her pregnancy, she had the option to separate and be discharged from the military--she chose not. If her family care plan fell apart and could not be fixed, if she showed up to deployment with child in hand and been honest with the command, the unit would have kept her back and processed her for discharge for failing family care plan. She did none of this, and that is the problem.

She committed some of the most serious offenses (AWOL, desertion, missing movement) and abandoned her unit--next, you are going to say if she (or any single mother) committed any crime to support herself and her son, that she should not be punished because no one will be able to care for the child. Please--take a few ROTC classes and learn a little more.

Christmas tree moved to new location

As an alumni, I am so sad to hear that they are moving the tree ceremony! Traditions are meant to be traditions and as TCU has gone under so many changes that are a huge improvement to the campus community, it saddens this frog that another tradition has changed. There is something special to know that I stood in front of Sadler and sung charols, listened to 'Twas the night before finals, and stood with my SGA counterparts and held my candle...ahh those were days.

Political children's book brainwashes the young

Those who know me would guess that Ms. DeBrecht's book would not have been on my son's reading list when he was younger. However, censorship is always the proverbial "slippery slope." Librarians, teachers, and well meaning community members have no right to restrict what you or your children read. Libraries are guided by collection development policies. Parents are responsible for monitoring the books (media) their children read (view), and adults are responsible for making those decisions for themselves.

A desperately needed place to park? No.
Protection from sexual assaults? No.
Food? No you charge me extra for that.
Quality professors? Heh, SPOT Evals can't come fast enough.

I'd love to have been at the trustee meeting when they voted.

Celibacy should be abolished for Catholic priests

To those of you who have posted, you need to read Illicit Celibacy by Edgar Davie. This book is endorsed by Father James P. Koerger, a priest of 50 years. His theological credentials: Licentiate of Sacred Theology, STL., qualify him to teach dogmatic Catholic theology at the Vatican approved educational institutions world wide. Fr. Koerber supports the theology of Illicit Celibacy. http://www.illicitcelibacy.com/

It is about time those who yearn to follow the teachings of Jesus as communicated in the Deposit of Faith realize how Hellenistic influences have stabbed Christianity in the back. And this fact is just the beginning, course 101.

Ryne, trust your ?self?, your mind that God gave you. It is telling you the truth. Don?t give your mind to another?s power, your mind is your?s. Study, learn, learn and study, and TRUST YOUR ?SELF?.

May God?s healing power be over, under, around and through you,

Pat

Journalists lack economic know-how

I didn't read the original AP article, so I really can't make any claims. I disagree with two of your points though:

1. "Now that she can make more ice cream with her new machine, this increases the amount of milk, sugar and boxes required. This would increase production in those industries too."

This would be true in a booming economy with unlimited demand, but right now people are watching their wallets carefully. Sally would see the decreased sales and note that she doesn't want to have excess inventory, especially with a perishable good such as ice cream. She wants to make as many ice cream boxes as she can sell...so if she knows she's only going to sell 100 per week, she's only going to make 100 per week- even if she can make more ice cream at a cheaper cost. Productivity wouldn't typically be a problem, but when it's paired with the state of the economy at the moment it certainly can be.

2. "The second problem with this news story is that journalists think that labor is a good thing and that unemployment is bad. Whenever I get more leisure time to do things I want to do, I usually consider it a good thing."

Unemployment IS a bad thing. Unemployment doesn't include those who aren't looking for jobs and only takes into account those individuals who are actively seeking jobs but remain unhired. If people who need jobs to pay bills and meet their basic needs- eating ain't cheap- aren't getting paid, there is a whole slew of other problems that come into play. For two frequently talked-about effects, unemployment means unhealthy/malnourished people, which incurs health care costs, and creates a population that is desperate for a way to make ends meet, which increases crime rates.

I'm not saying that everyone who is unemployed is going to start robbing houses and filling up our hospitals, but I am definitely saying that unemployment is a bad thing with serious effects that strike outside of the economy.

Journalists know how to research articles, interview experts and write a compelling story, and they can't be expected to know everything about economics. Since you're majoring in both- admirable- I understand your frustration, but this issue isn't limited to economics. I'm sure there are health care professionals who feel that the current debate on reform is being reported inaccurately. I agree that journalists should be well-informed, but the fact is that they can't have the equivalency of a bachelor's degree in every subject.

Church has no place in healthcare debate

Thank you for taking the time to express your view on the health care debate, however I disagree with you on a number of points:

"Issuing a general condemnation of the bill for an irrelevant reason and a vague defamatory statement leads to an uninformed and misled group of citizens."

I disagree in that the reason is "irrelevant". Since there are legislators trying to put federally-funded abortion into the bill, choosing to not support the bill because of abortion is not "irrelevant" at all, they are choosing not to support the bill because it disagrees with their views on abortions (and the last time I checked, Catholics are very pro-life). Also, they are not misleading the people, they are simply saying "As a devout Catholic, you should not support this, because it will federally fund abortion, which will conflict with your views as a Catholic."

Where is the misleading in this? You can disagree with their pro-life stance all you want, but that does not mean they are misleading. Is this not America, where people have a right to oppose something based on their views? And also, they can't simply pick and choose which components of the bill they want to support, it's one bill; either support all of it, or don't. The Catholics who disagree with the bill because of the abortion component are simply sticking to their guns.

I agree with Brian, it says nowhere in the Constitution that there is a wall between church and state, only that the US government cannot set up a state-sponsored church and the like. Nothing else on the subject. The Declaration of Independence even mentions God.
Finally, this whole argument should be a non-factor considering that the whole idea of a government-run health care is unconstitutional. If you are already convinced that it's constitutional, then I doubt anything I say can convince you otherwise, but if you read The Constitution, the government has absolutely no power to do what it's trying to do with health care. Read The Constitution, then read about Jefferson's & Hamilton's debate about a federal bank. If the framers didn't even allow a government-run bank, do you really think they would allow a government-run health care? It worries me that this was written by a political science major. Please familiarize yourself with the facts next time.

Facebook knows a little too much about its users

Facebook lies...they've had complaints about tracking beacon since 2007, but still use them. Also, although they are technically are "putting new privacy changes up for review", they hide the link that shows users how to find the changes. Additionally, they also hide the mechanism that allows you to comment on the proposed changes, should you be diligent and clever enough to find them. Finally, if you *do* make a comment about any "proposed changes", and your comment is critical of facebook's proposal, they will selectively look through your account for any type of minor violation of their 39 page "terms of use" document and then promptly disable your account, which deletes your comment.

Seriously..these are some pretty evil dudes running this "I want to get rich by doing an IPO" company. This company is doing continuous massive harm to people's privacy by deliberately obfuscating all controls which make your information private. In order to keep your info private, you must individually select 47 buttons/checkboxes on 25 screens, and you must *ALREADY KNOW* that if you use ANY FACEBOOK APP, your information is automatically exposed to the app builders, who are completely free to do whatsoever they wish with your list of friends, your name, your birthdate, your activity listing, and your messages.

Seriously. Facebook is evil, driven by the greed of Zucker and his minions.

There are at least 2 sites which are exploiting as comedy the damage being done to people's privacy via facebook: http://www.lamebook.com and http://fail-book.tumblr.com/

Facebook continues to be a poorly written, massively insecure application:
http://www.loosewireblog.com/2009/11/hundreds-o...

which allows apps to steal financial information
http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10385498-245....

and is constantly being exposed as deliberately trashing users privacy EVEN AFTER THEY SHUTDOWN THE APP: http://www.pcworld.com/article/140182/facebooks_beacon_more_intrusive_than_previously_thought.html

Survey shows students suggest new tailgate location
Surveys are fine and dandy but when it comes to our kids I think we need to have safety in mind. you talk about selling beer at only $2.25 this in my opinion is a disaster waiting to happen. Beer is at a cheap price they have their car nearby I do not want to see someone crashing and killing someone. Come on people move this close to the dorms so they could walk to it instead.
You obviously do not go to the student tailgates and have no idea of the layout. It is already very close to the dorms. However, the biggest problem, is that it is far away from greek row, which puts up tents and grills at the student tailgate. If the administration really wants a larger student turnout, they should move the tailgate back to the Brachman parking lot where it belongs. That is where you will have the largest student turnout and the shortest walk to the game. Or perhaps, TCU just needs to revisit all of its policies on tailgating. We are collectively known as one of the worst universities for pre-game tailgating activity. This is mostly due to the gigantic amount of rules imposed on the student population in the name of "safety". I can understand some rules, for instance, banning kegs is obvious. But the problems reside in the small stickler policies which restrict our freedoms to have a fun afternoon, and then cheer on our Frogs to victory.

Ron Shirey arrived at TCU when I was a sophomore, and I had the privilege of singing with him for the next four years as a student. I also held positions on the music staff of UCC during two of those years, and this article is right on the money. Shirey was a true Choir Master in every sense of the word. We worked so hard under his guidance to create the most perfect presentations of the greatest music ever written. Every "generation" of Shirey's kids received the very best from their music education at both TCU and UCC, and it is my hope that both institutions will honor his legacy by diligently searching for a wonderful replacement to continue his tradition of excellence. There cannot be another "Shirey" - he was One of a Kind! Prayers are constant for his family and present students as they grieve this great loss.

The red is on the helmet looks terrible. It's not even a school color and the strip layout is bad. I don't care if it is suppose to symbolize blood. The school and it's marketing needs to keep ther eye on the ball by building a consistent image to project which I think their current look provides. TCU athletic/PR needs to avoid the novelty gimmicks that distract from the program(s). Rather they need to be focusing on connecting with the community, reduce endzone and upper deck ticket prices and fill the seats.

I dont have any idea what the arrangement with Nike is but it would only be worth it if Nike paid a large sum of money to the school.

2. No cost-competitive advantage of the insurer-friendly scheme does not clear the grave concern about the unsustainable cost of overall health care program in the long run. Baucus scheme Doesn't Bend Cost Curve Enough, Experts Say.

The scheme proposes a "fake" alternative, nonprofit insurance cooperatives -- and it places so many "restrictions" on these cooperatives that, according to the Congressional Budget Office, they "seem unlikely to establish a significant market presence in many areas of the country."

3. Even with some benefit for primary practitioners, the baseless scheme does not come with fundamental payment reform, or a pay for value reimbursement formula. It means that the insurer-friendly scheme is not cleaning up the concerns over a quality issue and $9trillion of deficit over the next decade.

((Here is some of CBO analysis : While the costs of the financial bailouts and economic stimulus bills are staggering, they are only a fraction of the coming costs from Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Over the next decade, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that each year Medicaid will expand by 7 percent, Medicare by 6 percent, and Social Security by 5 percent. These programs face a 75-year shortfall of $43 trillion--60 times greater than the gross cost of the $700 billion TARP financial bailout)).

4. For Medicare & Medicaid system to survive from the most wasteful structure on earth, enough savings by way of fundamental changes need to be secured, in return, the savings thereof suffice to meet the goal of well-planned public option.

((Even with far less visits to docs, which average a half or a third of them in any other free states, Americans pay roughly twice as much per person right now)).

5. For the record, prior to nation-wide deployment of reform, The State Of "Yes We Can", Minnesota influenced by Mayo clinic spends "20 percent" less per patient than the national average and 31 percent less than in the highest cost state. It highlights that no substantial tax raise is needed at least for sure.

((The $583 billion of revenue package, and the astronomical savings of public option aside, "20%" of $923.5bn (the combined Medicare and Medicaid cost per year, as of July) represents around $184.7bn per year and 1.847trillion over the next decade, and this patient-centered value alone could be sufficient to meet the goal of public option)).

6. In brief, the long-awaited and most hopeful health care plan is to meet these criterias : Affordability, Quality, and A Check function against runaway premiums thereof.

Clearly enough, due largely to its lower overhead cost, purchasing power and fundamental payment reform, the well-planned public option would be doing moore than the fabricated scheme by THE INDUSTRY in these aforementioned regards.

Now is the moment to turn page to contemporary energy and financial upgrades glossed over in 8 years.

Firm parenting key to solving child obesity

Childhood obesity is such a multi-faceted issue that I am disappointed at the weakness of this article. Having an obese parent more than doubles a child's chance of being obese so perhaps its not that parent's aren't strict enough with their children, but don't know how to make good decisions themselves. While education should be key to solving this problem, environment also plays a huge role. The disproportionate amount of advertising for unhealthy foods to both parents and children is wholly disheartening. We also know that the lower your income, the more likely you are to be obese. With a low income, energy-dense nutrient poor foods like those found at the drive-through are the only affordable options. I recognize that your argument was to not call the parents abusive or neglectful and thus put obese children in foster care; however, your argument ended up putting more blame on the parents and thus being (though inaccurate) more supportive of faster care for these children. As for the "street going both ways", a common reason for putting children in faster care is the fact that their parents underfeed or starve them. More research should have been done before this was made public, even an opinion should be based on fact.

It's not just a bunch of foolish freshman who supported this Black Out. There were 1200 students from all classifications who supported it. I don't think students raised their voices about having a Black Out game sooner because we didn't realize how great our football team was going to be this year. Utah is our biggest home game this season since they are ranked in the top 25 and we really need to support the football team when they come here. We need to be at the game to support the TCU Football team. We didn't get on ESPN for beating BYU or shutting out UNLV but we got on ESPN for not filling our stadium. We're a top 10 ranked team and we're fighting over what color shirt to wear to a game that a some people won't even stay for.

I served at the Get Motivated Seminar in Fort Worth TX, and enjoyed almost every minute. I was unwittingly involved in a brief conflict between two disgruntled men over reserved seating, but the issue was resolved pretty fast. This was not the place for such foolish behavior.
I was allowed to attend the presentations by Tamara Lowe and former President George W. Bush. The wisdom and authenticity of these two people amazed me. They both achieved their goal of highly motivating their audience, as I noticed people around me were keenly focused on the center stage as they spoke.
It was a blessing to participate in such a well-orchestrated, high-quality, motivational event and I would willingly do it again, and again, and again . . .

Baby Einstein won't make your child a genius

I can't for the life of me figure out why my colleagues in music education continue to grasp at straws with this research as a way to implore school boards not to cut their 'band' budgets. Studying music doesn't make anyone smarter. But it has been recognized since ancient times as a key component to a well rounded education, just like the graphic arts, and athletics. When a society deems these skills as unimportant they should be allowed to dwindle and fade away and said society will need to deal with the consequences. The profession of music education has suffered far too long, constantly begging for support, and giving away its very value in order to merely stay alive. Let the music die and perhaps we can start over from scratch to become a vibrant, healthy, and dare I say PROFITABLE industry. Then we will be able to help those who cannot help themselves. If music makes one smarter, how come an entire industry can't figure out how to market their own product?

AFTERdark concert sends message of deceit

Hello,
Interesting thoughts,,
But my question to the author is, What are you doing to spread the Gospel?
I've seen Joe White and was very impressed with the message he brought forth. Although I do see your point, what do you think Jesus did for you?
No, it wasn't pretty and the Passion of the Christ reflects the brutality that He endured for me,
for you,
and even for Mr. Wunderlich.
The Bible is a love story for us detailing how we are to live.
Be blessed,

israel

BTW,
it is clear to me that Mr. Wunderlich is in need of prayer.

TCU Rangers deserve as much support as they give

Recently I took my daughter (a senior in high school) to a TCU football game. We arrived at Ft. Worth early (we were attending Monday at TCU)just so that we could catch the game. While heading to the football field, we ran into these amazing polite, excited young men, all dressed as cowboys. My daughter ask to have a picture taken with them and they readily agreed. Thank you rangers for making my daughter feel welcomed at TCU.
Let me know where I can e-mail a copy of the photo to you guys.

Sincerely,
Patsy Burton

Fans play a huge role in Frogs' BCS chances

I cannot beleive that the TCU student body doesn't fill up the stands for a team that is ranked where it is in the BCS. Of all the teams in the top 25 I would bet that TCU's attendance is the worst. If the BCS decision comes down to perceived interest by students and alumni they will pick a team that "travels" well. With the look of the stands on Saturday that will leave TCU representing the Mountain West at something like the MAACO Bowl. Get out there for Utah!

'Paranormal Activity' lacks scares and creativity

Im in shock that people were interested and scared by this movie. It was terrible. If I watched it in a theater I prolly wouldve killed myself so maybe there wouldve been some actual paranormal activity and people wouldve been entertained. Luckily I watched it at a friends via bootleg (thank God it was free) and couldnt wait for it to get over so half way through I convinced my friend that this movie was all real and the actors were real people so it entertained me to watch him after that but the movie was a waste of time and thats almost 2 hrs I can never get back. Do not see this movie you can wait for the DVD if you must see it believe me. On another note props to the people involved in this film because they got away with making a really shitty horror movie for real cheap (less than 15000) and made 67 mil the 1st week because so many people in this country are idiots. And we wonder why were in a recession...

PS. Screw Steven Spielberg for helping this movie get to mainstream

Institute creates DVD series to help adopting families

Quote:

"It's just something I don't think people think about enough, how it emotionally hinders children being unstable and moving around in foster care," Ramsey said.

Purvis said the Institute of Child Development became a Vision-In-Action program of the university in 2005 and was funded by donations from private foundations for the first three years of operation.

Funding allowed Purvis to travel internationally on the institute's behalf, making connections and creating a respected reputation for the institute, she said. Purvis said she is still in touch with contacts overseas and would eventually want to see the DVDs available in multiple language subtitles."

Having these in multiple languages would be helpful.

Abortion addicted mother has no right to pro-choice
So, it would be better to force the obviously mentally-ill woman to undergo pregnancy and birth? It would be better to put that child into her care?

Further, given the way addictions work, who was supposed to catch something she no doubt worked to hide? If she kept getting abortions from the same medical provider, I'd blame him or her for not referring her to some variety of mental health treatment.

As for the book being published; it's sensationalism, of course. It will sell a lot of copies and make the publisher money. That's pretty much all they needed to know.

Just noted you're a psych. major. Wow, hope I never need to seek counseling from someone as judgmental as you appear to be.
This is not being judgmental. It's an over view of a woman's addiction to abortion. It's interesting and for shock value.

Also, I highly doubt that the healthcare provider was the same every time. You know, "because she worked so hard to hide it". Doctors are under an oath to report these kinds of things. Just the same as they are suppose to report suspected signs of abuse or neglect.

Also, don't attack the messenger. It comes off as very unprofessional.

September sexual assault still under investigation

Should churches or our federal government be held libel for the murder of sex offenders?
Sex laws have been built on misconceptions and myth.
The Supreme Court just ruled on sex offender laws where some factions of our government think by some inert reasoning that sex offender should be quarantined or executed. Video taken in another country shows where sex offenders were placed on a pole much like the Catholics use to use a pyramid shaped object and have them sit on it and spin, the pole travels through the body looking for the throat but if not found its ok because the sharpened end of the pole will come out somewhere to the delight of these very strange people who think such thoughts are a bit barbaric. The heritage of the act is in its self a brutal throwback to violent uneducated people who are so obsessed with any sex & the only way to deal with this kind of "hierarchy" of historic hysteria. A word taken from hysterectomy, hysteria is tied to castration, we are supposed to be the most advanced nation and we still have a death penalty when the rest of the world except for some nations we are still warring with/selling weapons too, while other nations went home our weapons dealers and torture lovers delighting in support for the death of people they don?t know or want to simply because they don?t know how to get money with out taking it from someone by force. Is that supposed to include mutilations? In my humble opinion this alone ?is? terrorist activities as much as severed hands, ears, heads, or making a case with nothing more than an obsession justified by lies. The registry?s origin in the Jim Crow hang~um laws that brought disgrace to our nation allowing thieves and murderous societal bigots who have trashed any shot at making good of a program in its design to make money destroying our nation and its people. We can not survive using this behavior model because we are compounding the problem since the numbers are increasing to include the children they purport to protect.
The doctoring, castration/hysterectomy/health care/physic care of people through sex laws that have damaged everyone it has touched. What about the people who are being used by the Medicare programs that requires these mutilations for both men and woman after they take their means of support? Digging around in someone?s genitalia because you want what a weaker nation? Can't you see? You have created the model and it is worthless! Why don't we just indiscriminately kill people we don't know? That is statically the next sex offender, because over 90% of all new offences are committed by someone ?not? on the sex offender registry and the numbers are increasing not decreasing so as a behavior model this is really worthless.
So what is the use of such laws as the sex offender registry other than to terrorize people? With the murder of so many sex offenders and the continued disregard for life by the use of the registry it will be no time at all before the federal government will be held liable for their deaths through federal court. There are ridiculous laws built for people unaware of what they do because of these misconceptions and fear creating an environment of mistrust where life has no meaning for both side of an issue that is made important by the same people who enjoy watching/participating in the torture/suffering of both sides for what touching someone? Who is really the terrorist since these laws connect?

Official: Assault details not released to protect victim

I am writing this comment, in regards to David Hall's editorial "Withholding details in crime case unwise". Although I agree that the destination and location of the assault are pertinent to protect student body members it really upsets me that the Skiff continues to ask for specific details of the attack, Hall wrote "the term 'sexual assault' may refer to any of different offenses that vary in severity. Students deserve to know the exact threat facing them." This information isn't going to protect anyone, the best way to protect yourself is to stay aware of your surroundings and students deserve to know where they need to be especially aware but whether or not the student was fondled, groped, raped, etc. is none of our business, and doesn't affect your chances of being attacked. It really surprises me that students who are required to take a class in Media Law & Ethics would have such little regard for the privacy of a victim. We live in a very small, tight-knit community and eventually her identity will be revealed, and if disclosed the details of the crime will be tied to her name forever. A sexual assault is a very personal experience and it isn't the Skiff's place to know the gorry details. And I think we can all acknowledge what this is about, our campus thrives on gossip and rumors and as a previous reporter of the Skiff it really pains me to see that the Skiff would want to be a part of that.

And three years later, what John Williamson wrote concerning fair trade remains correct.

As far as "subjectivity" and economics is concerned, take it up with the neo-libertarian university economists who pass themselves off as "academics" -- and who I suspect are your economics role models. Notice how globalization has merely served to completely hollow-out America's blue collar and middle classes -- then notice how the economists who touted globalization as something that would lift all boats look at stupid as the physicians of old who practiced blood-letting.

"When the circulation ends, the books get re-collected, Cyr said, and are then donated to other schools.

Albom's representatives said he was unavailable for comment.

Albom's visit, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled to last until 8 p.m. and will be immediately followed by a book signing. "

This is a rare opportunity to meet a best selling author.

Best-selling author Albom brings humor, faith to TCU

Quote:

"One cause in particular was discovered on the way to a baseball game where members of a church were sleeping by snow-covered pews due to a hole in the roof.

Ten percent of the proceeds from his latest book will go to repair the hole in the roof of the Detroit church.

"You have to have a little faith and maybe we will figure it out ourselves," Albom said."

Albom is redefining what it is to be a sports writer. As newspaper subscipotions continue to drop this type of journalism is only gong to increase.

Quote:

"I was one of the first ones to get it going, so fortunately by the time the semester began I was good to go," Jenkins said.

Josephine Schuda, a VA spokeswoman, said undetermined state budgets this summer held up schools sending enrollment certifications, which affected the payment process. She said the department hired about 800 people to help input data to process payments. She said the VA should have a new system to speed up the process by next year."

Schuda is on message with his statement on state budgets

Quote:

"Once you get into conference play, everyone has seen what you do and how you do it," he said. "You can fool (opponents) once, but after you have played them you aren't going to be able to fool good coaches again."

Last season TCU beat CSU 13-7 in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Horned Frogs have won five of their six meetings with the Rams, including the past five meetings.

CSU's lone win in the all-time series came in 1998 when both schools belonged to the Western Athletic Conference."

Balance and the ability to keep the defense guessing is the key.

Public desensitized by commonality of sex scandals

Well, Chris, I agree with you to some extent. I was appalled and or horrified by all of these stories. However, I think what Letterman did was pretty bad too and he certainly doesn't deserve applause or higher ratings! He's another cheater. He was supposed to have been with his son's mother since 1982. But at least the women he was having sex with were consenting adults and fortunately they were not related to him! And Edwards, same goes for him. But his wife is DYING! I also think it is disgusting that there are people making Roman Polanski out to be a victim! He needs to pay for his crime like everyone else! When it comes to Mackenzie Phillips, I have to disagree with you. I just finished reading her book. I bought it to support her. Now she truly was a victim! And I don't have words strong enough to define what a horrible man her father was! She says their relationship was consensual. But she was blacked out or on drugs every time. In my opinion, she was not in the right state of mind to be able to give consent. I found her book to be inspirational; and she has definitely survived a whole lot worse than I have! And it made me realize that my life is not so bad! I believe she spoke out and wrote this book to help others and I think it was meant to be a part of her path to healing. Thank you if you have taken the time to read this and have a nice day! :)

Engineering professor dies from prostate cancer

My dad left us a document for my siblings and my mom to read--I would like to share a passage that means a lot to our family---

"I'd certainly like to be remembered as a man of clarity--in his heart, in his faith, in his convictions, and in his actions. And although he was passionate about his work...and always did his best...he was only a good engineer--this was second. His great passion was his family and friends--this was always first. This passion occupied his heart and soul. When the moment comes in my life when you're talking about my last days, I'm determined that you will say that he was devoted to his partner and children, he was respected, he always gave the last ounce of his being for those whom he cared most about...not himself, but God, his family and friends."

Great to hear of the commitment to fair trade! Readers may also want to engage their voice in reaching out to the White House...

Fair Trade the White House is a coalition of fair trade vendors and organizations which is inviting the First Lady to join the fair trade movement and make the White House a "Fair Trade Home." The purpose of the outreach is to raise greater awareness of fair trade to the American consumer, so each person will choose to "Join the Fair Party," and integrate more fair trade purchases into their regular buying habits, so that poverty is reduced in America and around the world.

Green America, TransFair, Fair Trade Federation, IMO, Fair Trade Resource Network are all involved in this outreach, as are 100 other fair trade vendors and retailers so far.

The public invitation to the First Lady is available to sign online at www.fairtradewhitehouse.com. Fair trade supporters ranging from actor Tony Hale from ?Chuck,? and ?Arrested Development? fame, to global shoppers are signing the First Lady?s invitation.

Affirmative action does more harm than good

Your article brings out several interesting points about human nature, but that is life !! As with any Graduate School Program, competition for admissions is intense. But one can solve this problem. For Law School, you may want to review the article 'Fixing Law School Admissions' on the web as posted by the Wesleyan Argus Student paper of Middletown, Ct submitted by a former employee of the law school admissions services/council (LSAS/LSAC)organization who worked directly with Jim Pitts and Gregg Abbott in resolving the impasse on admissions and was acknowledged by the Department of Justice.... Case No# DJ 169-73-0.

What many students forget is that graduate school is a business and must respect the principles of Supply and Demand, however the issue for Diversity within the 'Law' program has always been representation.

But in selecting candidates for law school, many applicants would not envision their career as supporting a community who requires their skills and services but cannot afford to pay. They are looking for the big dollar jobs. But as you commented, it is assumed that you may find it easiler to gain access, but opportunities for employement have always been based on your graduate GPA regardless of the program.

Any Graduate program has never been a 'one and done' deal. Your ability to get thru the program and opportunity for employment should be the only criterion for admissions, however this country now realizes that when we break things down, the question is asked: Who would be the best candidate for the limited opportunities that now exist ??

Speaker: Lack of worldwide compassion led to 9/11

I'm wondering if the author attended the same talk I did. Not only was the speaker far from humorless, she noted that her first thoughts in reaction to the events of 9/11 concerned the historical role played by her native Britain's involvement in the the Middle East. Armstrong's central thesis early in her talk concerned the role that modernization (and modernization without appropriate religious compassion) has had in the development of religious fundamentalism throughout the world (including in the U.S.), and she certainly did note that Western interventionism has hastened that modernization in the middle east beyond what would have been the native timetable. She particularly excoriated the former British empire for its hand in fomenting fundamentalism in many parts of the world. While the author of this article is correct that Armstrong called for religious compassion as a cure for much modern strife, she most certainly did not shy away from observing that Middle Eastern radical fundamentalists do maintain a hatred of modernism (often identified with Westernization), and often as a result of political interactions with the West. To conclude from the talk that "Karen Armstrong doesn't place the blame of 9/11 on policies, individuals or even hate of the western world," is not only incorrect, it insults her entire point - that religion needs to serve as a compassionate buffer for these otherwise political effects.

Frogs top 10 spot best in 50 years

Quote:

"With a loss over the weekend to the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Houston dropped out of BCS contention and enters the week unranked.

Boise State University, ranked No. 6 in the AP poll, remains TCU's main competitor for an outside bid to a BCS bowl game.

Brigham Young University is the only team left on TCU's schedule who is ranked, with a No. 18 spot in the AP poll."

BYU spreads the ball and this makes it very difficult to blitz. TCU must run the ball in order to keep that offense off the field and out of sync.

This rant is an over-reaction. I would imagine the writer has specific ties to the speaker (possibly the host), explaining his defensive tone. I read the Skiff almost every day, and the headline above the leading photo is almost never literal. Sure it's a bit misleading, but it sure got your attention. If you HAD taken the time to read the story, you would know that the story clarified the headline, instead of suggesting the speaker advocated drug use.

Will someone from the Skiff please call out Legia Abato on her comment about charging students for the "expensive biodegradable cups" at 1873, because they are charging for the very cheap and non-biodegradable plastic cups at SubConnection as well. Dining Services walks around campus with their nose in the air, acting like we are all idiots and completly blind to their b.s. someone please take a stand.

Text messaging could hurt ability to read nonverbal cues

Interesting read! I think texting has some very bad consequences as well. Yet, I can't imagine a day without text messaging in my life. It's just too addictive. I do know that my attention span would increase dramatically without it. My day is filled with times where I'll drop everything that I'm doing, even if it's important, just to look at a text I just received. Is there a rehabilitation center for addicts? (haha) I liked this article. Keep up the good work!

It is depressing that none of the major TV companies never televise the Frogs ball games. That is right, not even ESPN will carry a rivalry such as TCU vs SMU. And both teams have very good teams this year.

Spay and neuter requirement a necessary action

Mary Duerier summed the situation up correctly. As for the reputed masses of animals in shelters, I recently read of Costa Rican street dogs being imported to an east coast shelter to fill the demand for adoptable rescue dogs! The fact is that this type of "nanny" goverment will only force the breeding of companion animals into other countries where there isn't much cultural awareness about responsible animal husbandry. When these laws make it illegal to raise and sell puppies in the U.S. the business will grow in other countries. Humans have a need for dogs just as the domesticated dog has a need for us. I believe a positive approach would be public education and free or low-cost pet neutering.

Polanski deserves nothing short of sentencing

Shane,
You are so right about Polanski. The man is a criminal and should be treated as one. Michael Vick was rightfully punished for abusing dogs, and has seemed sincerely remorseful upon his release from prison, but understandably some people continue to struggle with him returning to a football career. Polanski never accepted his punishment nor does he show any remorse for abusing a 13 year old girl. He?s lived a gifted life in France, receiving awards and accolades from his peers, many of whom continue to support him. We need to hear a lot less from the clowns in Hollywood and more from thoughtful chemistry students.

Justice: Oath to constitution a priority

GENTLEMEN, AND JUSTICE THOMAS AND JUSTICE ROBERTS,

I am VERY happy to hear Justice Thomas' comments made at the University. I hope that his morals and values and his "utmost concern as a judge is to honor the oaths he took to uphold the
U.S. Constitution" will indeed be a witness to his co-workers--all both liberal and conservative. We should not have to put up with "liberal" or "conservative" when it comes to following the U.S. Constitution and the Justice of this great Nation!

I have read a couple of articles recently that involves Justice Thomas and Justice John Roberts. An attorney from California who is seeking to make peace about the eligibility of Barrack Hussein Obama to be President of the United States--as a "natural-born" citizen--per the U.S. Constitution. The attorney (I can't find her name immediately, but she's got a case now coming up before a Judge in California seeking the same investigation to be mandated for the long form birth certificate with the hospital's name and the doctor's name--on the birth certificate,
itself--to be revealed so that we will KNOW THAT HE WAS BORN IN HAWAII. The picture of the one that he put on the internet does not do just that! Also, the one on the internet DOES NOT even look at all like the Hawaiian birth certificates that were issued and registered in August, 1961. (World Net Daily: source for this information)

The attorney mentioned above saw both Justice Roberts and Justice Thomas at some social gathering some time ago and at that time spoke of the above problem. They BOTH PROMISED TO LOOK INTO IT AND SEE IF THEY COULD GET THE CASE AGREED TO BEFORE THE SUPREME COURT--Justice Thomas replied, "It takes four judges."

Please see that this e-mail gets to both Justice Thomas and Justice Roberts. I am VERY CONCERNED for my children, grandchildren, great grandchildren--you name it! With the monies being spent now, they will DEFINITELY NOT BE ABLE TO FIND THE AMERICAN DREAM!!! that we have enjoyed so much.

Again, I am very proud of Justice Thomas for revealing his most demanding desire to honor the U.S. Constitution that he swore to adhere to at his swaring-in ceremony.

Thank you very much for your time and energy in this case.

In Christ Jesus and For His Holy Namesake,
Nellie Austin

Speaker: Marijuana should be legalized
Illegal immigration was way down on the list of reasons to outlaw pot.

1. The paper industry saw hemp as a threat.

2. Tobacco industry wasn't happy that smokers would smoke one or two marijuana cigarettes instead of one or two packs of nicotine cigarettes.

3. Alcohol industry didn't like the idea that an easy to grow weed could serve as a way to derive pleasure.

You could put alcohol and tobacco down as schedule 1 narcotics and make them illegal, but the public wouldn't stand for it.

The only reason they got away with outlawing pot was because it had very low usage.
You forgot to mention the Cotton and Fuel industries that would be crippled by a US hemp industry.

Overboard pranks abuse meaning of rivalry

You are a tool... the pranks are what keep the rivalry alive and are part of the fun. I am not talking about vandalism or breaking things, but the Diamond M on the field at Amon-Carter or the Purple Fountain at SMU are harmless and make for great stories...

Beyond this door lies total committment! You probably don't get what that means, but I do!
