Changes to a teaching certification program in the College of Education will give students more flexibility as they enter the workforce, an associate professor in the program said. With the new EC-6 program, certified students will be qualified to teach grade levels from early childhood to sixth grade, rather than through only the fourth grade with the former EC-4 program. The Bank of America Foundation donated a $20,000 grant that will benefit the Miller Speech and Hearing Clinic, the chairman of the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department said. Christopher Watts, chair of the department of communication sciences and disorders, said the money will be used to offset costs in providing speech and hearing therapy. (0) comments

No arrests made in vehicle burglary

TCU Police detained two men and one woman on suspicion of motor vehicle burglary Monday night, but no arrests were made, a TCU Police official said. Sgt. Alvin Allcon said TCU police stopped and searched a maroon Ford sedan after a suspected burglary in the parking lot of the Bayard H. (1) comment

Six of 11former employees of Edens and Deco Deli returned to work Monday in The Main, while the others face anywhere from a week to six months before returning to TCU, said the marketing manager of Dining Services. Former Edens and Deco Deli employees Belinda Leon, Peter Thipp, Ernestina Lopez, David McKenzie, Carla Wilson and Jana Crabtree took shifts from The Main that worked with their schedules, said Legia Abato, marketing manager for Dining Services. Residential Services is sponsoring the first diversity poster competition on campus to encourage students to visually express how they perceive diversity and what it means to them. Ashanti Williams, the hall director for Brachman, Martin Moore, and Wiggins halls, said the competition is designed to get students to visualize and think about diversity on a broader spectrum. Traveling and spending time outdoors led Ian Dalziel to apply to the Navy; however, after learning that a lazy eye would keep him from being enlisted, a keen curiosity for the Earth led him in another direction. Dalziel, a research professor at the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin, presented his lecture "Is There a Supercontinent Cycle in Earth History: Paleontology over the Last Billion Years" Monday night at the Sid Richardson Building. Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor will be honored at a Brite Divinity School banquet March 29, despite recent concerns from the public in response to media reports of the pastor's harsh past sermons. TCU will announce today that it, FPL Energy and the University of Oxford will enter into a research partnership on how to integrate wind energy into the Texas ecological community, an environmental science professor said. Mike Slattery, a professor of environmental science, said the research grant that TCU received for the partnership is the largest research grant in school history. (0) comments

New UDLA rector promises to improve conditions of school

TCU's provost said he hopes the new rector at Mexican sister school Universidad de Las Americas-Puebla would help repaire a damaged relationship with the university. Nowell Donovan, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, said he expects the installment of Luis Ernesto Derbez as UDLA's rector will generate a review of TCU's relationship with UDLA. Pastor's recent comments draw mixed reactions

The decision to continue with a banquet honoring the Rev. Jeremiah Wright was met with varying opinions from students, faculty and alumni of TCU and Brite Divinity School. Chancellor Victor Boschini could not be reached for comment, but said in an e-mail statement that Brite and TCU were separate entities and the decision to award Wright was Brite's, not TCU's. Effective communication in a multicultural and multireligious world is the key to tolerance and appreciation of different religions, a theology professor told Brite Divinity School students Tuesday. Peter C. Phan, Ignacio Ellacuria Chair of Catholic social thought at Georgetown University, discussed in a church at Weatherly Hall whether leaders of different religions engaging in dialogue will undermine or replace the mission of evangelism. The theatre department is undergoing a curriculum makeover in an attempt to be accredited by an organization of schools that establish national standards for undergraduate and graduate theatre degree plans, the chairman of the department said.
