People often think that I am a conservative, but I'm not. I'm a libertarian. Conservatives take pride in the idea that they want a more free government. "Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives," Ronald Reagan once said. But conservatives also frequently oppose abortion, gay marriage, marijuana legalization and other views that constantly contradict what freedom is. (2) comments
The English author G.K. Chesterton once said, "art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere." This quip echoed through the chasms of my mind when I heard about Britney Spears' controversial single "If U Seek Amy." For those who are not quite as hip as me, it phonetically spells out the F-word in sequence with 'me. (3) comments
Andrew Weatherford's Feb. 11 column, "Pop culture a reflection of immoral society," makes the argument that Britney Spears' music is a reflection of society's moral status. I could not disagree more. Every year, on Feb. 14, dozens of roses are purchased, boxes of chocolate are delivered, and restaurants are packed with lovebirds. Three-foot teddy bears convey a message of love and compassion, but also the fact that someone spent a ridiculous amount of money on something the recipient probably doesn't want as a permanent fixture in their home. I have flown halfway around the world to begin what could be one of the most influential experiences of my life. Studying abroad this semester, I'm shacked up in a suburb of Perth, Western Australia (and quite glad to be). I came prepared to soak in all of their environmental practices that I will be able to import to the United States. (2) comments
