Opinion

Success of prohibition only an illusion

Although 60 Minutes likely isn't the average TCU student's most Tivo'd program, a featured story on Sunday's edition was relevant to all college-age Americans. The topic was whether the minimum legal drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18. While it seems a little backward, John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College and founder of Choose Responsibility, thinks college students would be safer if they could legally consume alcohol at 18. Campus Voices: Is advising at TCU effective?

"The advising here could be better. It's OK. It's just there's not enough clarification needed or suggested as far as classes go. We end up taking more classes or finding out that we need an extra class or there's a class that we did take and we shouldn't have taken. (0) comments

After reading "University not reflective of 'Christian' in name," I felt compelled to address an issue that has been bothering me for a while. When I am walking in the hallway, I hear people saying "pop" instead of "Coke." In the library, I hear people greeting one another with "Hello" instead of "Howdy" after talking about a night spent at Purgatory instead of Billy Bob's. (1) comment

University doesn't reflect the C in TCU

It was bound to come out sooner or later, but the issue of the word Christian in the name of our university has eaten at me for quite some time. Riding in the elevator, I hear the Lord's name taken in vain. In the library, I can hear the f-word ring out while some other kids are talking about popping Adderall to help them stay awake long enough to cram for exams. (18) comments

Campus musicians need to inject some zest into local scene

Hey, lazy musicians: stop languishing and give Fort Worth some fresh tunes to tap its toes to. Garage drummers, bedroom guitarists and closet maraca players, I'm looking at you. I have walked by enough dormitories to know that this campus is full of musicians. (0) comments

In response to Rev. Andrew Weatherford's opinion piece from Wednesday's issue titled "University not reflective of 'Christian' in name," I would like to offer just a few points. Before I am decreed unholy, or a failed "(representative) of what is supposed to be the most prestigious Christian element on our campus," let me also explain that I am a licensed minister, Brite seminarian and currently on track to become ordained. Obama a modern-day FDR

Faced with an economic crisis not too far removed from the track we seem to be on now, FDR tried his best to stabilize the American economy in the 1930s. From the fireside radio chats to undercutting Congress to get bills passed, he took the necessary initiative to relieve the economic agony Americans were facing. (4) comments

Andrew Weatherford needs to come down off of his cross. Mr. Weatherford's Feb. 25 column "University not reflective of 'Christian' in name" is an example of the kind of intolerant, self-righteous hogwash that drives people away from Christianity. He implies that his particular fire-and-brimstone brand of southern-fried Protestantism is the only true faith, scorning interpretations of scripture that don't mesh with his views. (2) comments
