Many Democrats and even some prominent Republicans are calling for the federal government to nationalize major U.S. banks in order to control the current economic tailspin. Nothing scares bankers or shareholders more, and rightfully so. Nationalization causes detrimental turmoil to the financial markets. (0) comments
I had to respond John Andrew Willis' column in Friday's Skiff about how a lower age requirement for drinking would ensure safety. This is the most ridiculous twist of information I have ever seen. The premise of his article was that if people 20 and younger could legally drink in public then they would drink "more safely" because others could monitor them more readily. (0) comments
Everyone hold your breath for this news story. Literally. In a news report Feb. 19 from the Associated Press, it was reported that the Environmental Protection Agency is likely to consider carbon dioxide an air pollutant. I don't know when anyone decided that naturally formed elements in the atmosphere were a big deal. (6) comments
Although 60 Minutes likely isn't the average TCU student's most Tivo'd program, a featured story on Sunday's edition was relevant to all college-age Americans. The topic was whether the minimum legal drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18. While it seems a little backward, John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College and founder of Choose Responsibility, thinks college students would be safer if they could legally consume alcohol at 18. "The advising here could be better. It's OK. It's just there's not enough clarification needed or suggested as far as classes go. We end up taking more classes or finding out that we need an extra class or there's a class that we did take and we shouldn't have taken. (0) comments
After reading "University not reflective of 'Christian' in name," I felt compelled to address an issue that has been bothering me for a while. When I am walking in the hallway, I hear people saying "pop" instead of "Coke." In the library, I hear people greeting one another with "Hello" instead of "Howdy" after talking about a night spent at Purgatory instead of Billy Bob's. (1) comment
In the course of American history there has always been discrimination against people considered different. When the Americas were first colonized the settlers discriminated against the "savage" Native Americans. When the natives had all but been wiped out, Americans turned their attention to the African Americans, who were chained up and forced into slavery. (0) comments
Precariously perched along the Mexican border, Texas is affected by what goes on in the country in a multitude of ways. And the recent explosion of violence between drug cartels and the Mexican federal government led by Felipe Calderon is no exception. I have travelled to Mexico twice a year for more than 10 years now, and there's always an undertone of fear surrounding the cartels and the police there, but nothing like what is happening now. Obama's similarity to FDR calls for criticism, not praise I would like to commend the headline writer of "Obama's leadership echoes FDR" describing President Barack Obama's leadership as echoing Franklin Delano Roosevelt. A more true and accurate statement is hard to find. (3) comments
