The Free Application for Federal Student Aid form has gotten a lot of media attention lately regarding needed improvements, but it's not reasonable to expect any government program to run efficiently. The university's director of financial aid, Michael Scott, said in a Skiff article Tuesday this week that there were problems with the length, redundancy and inefficiency of the FAFSA system. The March 8 death of University of Kansas student Jason Wren from alcohol poisoning raised a question in my mind: Why is it legal to drink yourself to death while marijuana and hemp are still illegal substances? In 2009 about 565,000 Americans are expected to die of cancer, or more than 1,500 people per day, according to the American Cancer Society. Cancer is the second most common disease causing death in the U.S., topped only by heart disease.
