Opinion

Finally social networking Web sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and MySpace have become useful for something other than posting meaningless thoughts and viewing funny babies. In order to garner support for his valiant cause against the corporate giant Hansen Beverage Company, Matt Nadeau, co-owner of Rock Art Brewery out of Vermont, gathered support from the Internet and various other sources. The gubernatorial race between Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Gov. Rick Perry reached disappointing new lows with some of the name calling that's been going on for the past few weeks. I haven't seen this kind of vicious attacking, name-sullying and general contempt between two candidates since . (1) comment

The passage of time has provided many concrete examples of the perils of journalism. Within the past year there have been plenty of kidnappings throughout the Middle East and few releases. However, a new issue has burst onto the scene recently: that of the jurisdiction of these countries in arresting journalists and reporters whom they view as protestors or directly threatening to the political system. When Jonathan Bornstein scored the most amazing header of his life in the fifth minute of stoppage time during the USA/Costa Rica game Oct. 14, I jumped, screamed, yelled and celebrated idiotically, like I'm sure every other U.S. soccer fan did at that moment. (0) comments

Filippa Hamilton is a tall, gorgeous model. You have probably seen her in advertisements for Ralph Lauren for the last seven years, where she has been a contract model. Recently Hamilton was "let go" (read: fired) from her modeling contract due to the "inability to meet her contractual obligations," according to the New York Daily News. (1) comment

Chris Brown's concert ploy isn't fooling anyone

Chris Brown, the singer infamously known now for his domestic dispute with fellow musician Rihanna, is doing what anyone else in his position would do: a "fan appreciation" tour. Not only that, but he publicly announced the tour only a few hours after the release of a new Rihanna single. (4) comments

The Vatican announced Oct. 20 it will allow Anglicans and Episcopalians to join the Catholic Church. This would allow Anglican and Episcopalian parishes to retain their unique rights and practices, while recognizing the pope as their religious leader. Now before my devout Catholic grandparents completely cut me from their will, I have a memo to get out to every Catholic priest that bangs his head against the wall every time a Victoria's Secret commercial comes on. Inmates have a right to swine flu vaccinations

After front-page articles announced that Texas would be vaccinating inmates in Texas prisons for the swine flu, a public outcry led to an apparent reversal of the decision. One woman commented to NBC 5 that Texas should use the inmates like "guinea pigs" to see if the vaccine has any ill effects. (1) comment

Attacks on Sikhs show lack of American trust

The Sept. 11 attacks changed the United States in a series of cultural, social and political ways. While the war on terror rages on, to the chagrin of some and the disdain of others, possibly the most serious battle taking place is on U.S. soil. This war isn't fought with bombs and firearms, though. (4) comments

Military exhibits blatant homophobic tendencies

The "don't ask, don't tell" policy was put into place in 1993 to discourage gay men and women from being open about their sexual orientation in the military. However, during the past couple of years the majority of people being discharged because of their sexual orientation were women. (0) comments

Fast food dependency spreads deadly disease

"Till the cows come home." This popular and overused phrase now has some actual weight behind it with recent developments in the United States. Normally languid and sloth-like, the Elsies of America may soon be rushing off our menus in their delicious burger forms if certain groups get what they want. (0) comments

Marijuana prosecution should see its end

Whether it be TCU, Fort Worth or the state of Texas, I generally enjoy living in a clearly conservative atmosphere. The drawback, however, is that the most conservative individuals often fail to keep up with the times. I was very disappointed to see a prominent Texas politician, Representative Lamar Smith, speak out against the U. (4) comments
