As a then-subscriber to various New Age philosophies and a dabbler in syncretic spiritualism, I was totally smug-sure that all spiritual roads led to heaven, as long as I was 'a good person.' I did not need the Jesus-only constraints of Christianity. Then on Easter Sunday 2000 I was invited to a church service. For the first time in my life I heard the clearest exposition of the Gospel of salvation-through-Christ as the only way to the forgiveness of sin and eternal life. My conversion was not, however, an instantaneous event. Intellectually, I needed to KNOW that this that I felt internally moved to believe was rational, systematic and intellectually defensible. I did not want to take a blind so-called 'leap of faith.' So I undertook to study the truth claims of Christianity against those of the humanist and Eastern philosophies that I had up to then assumed made better sense of the past, present and future of humankind. In the course of formally studying the theology of Christianity over a three year period, I became convinced that biblical Christianity not only makes the world's only true assessment of the human dilemma, but offers the only workable solution to the the human condition. To borrow the words of pastor Alastair Begg of Parkside Church in Cleveland, OH, "You may not understand this book, but this book understands you." (BTW, I referenced 'biblical Christianity' to distinguish between true theology based on what the Bible says, and the liberal brand fashionably adopted by certain churches and groups.) Back on point: When it comes to life in the heareafter, there is no middle ground. There is no No Man's Land. You will either be with Christ in heaven, or away from Him in that place prepared for the devil and his demons. To reprise Jesus' words in Matthew 12:30 -- "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters." These sorts of things happen."* I would recommend you check out the life of Lee Strobel, formerly a hard-nosed legal editor on the Chicago Tribune, and an even harder-boiled atheist and ardent evolution-believer. When his wife became a Christian in 1979, an outraged Strobel decided to investigate the claims of Christianity with the intention of thoroughly debunking the Bible. He instead became a Christian. And out of his quest he has written numerous bestselling books including 'The Case for Christ,' 'The Case for Faith,'and 'The Case for a Creator.' Strobel also hosts 'Faith Under Fire,' a hard-hitting and intellectually angaging program on PAX TV. *"The point is, I'm open to the idea of God. I'd much rather devote myself to rational ethicism, roll the dice, and hope that God (if there is a God) will take it easy on a kind-hearted humanist."* I am not sure that "rational" ethicism and a chancy "roll the dice" belong in the same philosophical paradigm. Could anyone be rational while in the same instance pinning their hopes on a roll of the spiritual dice and in the beneficence of a cosmic you-know-not-what? *"Who knows, for certain, what's at the end of this ride. Not me. Not you. Despite our beliefs, we simply have no idea."* But we DO have an idea! We CAN know, and we do KNOW! Just as every appliance maker provides an Owner's Manual, so God has left us His Word - the Bible - as our guide, His Owner's Manual, on how to live successfully. "I will not leave you as orphans," Jesus tells all believers in John 14:18, "I will come to you." All that one needs to receive God's free gift of eternal life is to call on the name of the Lord Jesus "and you will be saved," promises Acts 2:21. Or Romans 10:9-10 -- "That if you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." If the God who has revealed Himself in the Bible as the Creator of this world and this universe for His purposes is really the One True God, then He is telling as the absolute truth in Acts 4:12 where we are remided that Jesus alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life: "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."[/QUOTE]
